In 1492 Granada, the last of the Muslim strongholds, surrendered ending Moorish rule and by 1516, Spain was a united kingdom under Habsburg rule. In 1561 King Filipe II moved the capital from Toledo to Madrid where it remains to this day.

Situated on a high plateau 667 meters above sea level, Madrid is Europe’s highest capital city. Madrid’s historic center can be divided into two parts: Old Town and so called, “Bourbon Madrid”.
 
Old Town retains vestiges of its medieval beginnings with its twisting streets and monuments from the period when Madrid was first established as Spain’s capital. “Bourbon Madrid holds the grand Baroque boulevards, spacious squares and impressive neoclassical fountains of the cosmopolitan capital.
 
Madrid, Spain’s largest city and is most representative of Spain’s image and culture as a whole. It’s the political center, financial center and also the country’s center geographically. In the pavement of Plaza del Sol is found the KM 0 marker, from which distance measurements for Spain’s six main highways begin.
