Madrid Museums Private Tour

OVERVIEW

Madrid, capital of Spain, is a modern, cosmopolitan city noted for many things: most importantly, for its art. Within the quarter known as “Bourbon Madrid” is found “The Golden Triangle of Art”; so named because it’s here that Madrid’s three most important art museums are found: The Prado Museum, Reina Sofía Museum and Thyssen Bornemisza Museum.

Together, these museums present a collection by international artists spanning from the 12th Century through to contemporary works. Your licensed local guide will escort you on a private walking tour to see the most famous of the works found in these three notable museums.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The Prado, opened in 1819, was Madrid’s first art museum. The core of the collection came from works owned by Spain’s royal family and they expanded it over time. Here is found the world’s most important collection of Spanish paintings as well as European classical art from the 12th to the 19th century. Works by Velásquez, Goya, Rubens and Titian, among others, are on display.

The Reina Sofía, which opened with its permanent collection in 1992, was created by royal decree and is named for the Queen of Spain. Housing mostly modern and contemporary Spanish art, the collection’s undoubted star is Picasso’s “Guernica”; his powerful statement on the Spanish Civil War. Other artists represented are Miró and Dalí.

The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum completes not only the triangle but also the extensive collection represented by the three museums. This survey of Western art fills in gaps within the other collections. Established from a private donation of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family’s art collection, works span from the 13th to the 20th century and represent artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Van Dyke, Kandinsky and many others.
