D-Day: The American Sector

OVERVIEW

Explore sites where American troops saw action in the historic initiative that was D-Day.

You'll visit Sainte-Mère-Église, noted for the landing of U.S. paratroopers and as one of the first towns liberated by the allies.  From here you'll drive through the typical Normandy countryside with its signature hedgerows -- an almost insurmountable obstacle in the allied taking of Normandy.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

You'll arrive at tiny Angoville-au-Plain to visit the small church where U.S. medics of the 101st Airborne set up an aid station, treating Americans and Germans alike during three  days of intense fighting there.

You'll see Utah Beach and Pointe du Hoc: a cliff-top German defensive position that threatened both U.S. landing beaches, and learn of the brave fight to take it.

Next, a visit to Omaha Beach: best defended of the D-Day beaches and site of the invasion's bloodiest action.  A visit to the American Cemetery at Colville-sur-Mer follows for what is sure to be a moving experience.

Your private excursion ends with a photo stop at the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer for an idea of the fire power the allies were up against during the landing operations.

Return to port.
