D-Day: Strategic Overview

OVERVIEW

If you have just one opportunity to visit the sites of D-Day where history was made, then this is the excursion you can't miss.  We'll take you to some of the most strategically important locations of the D-Day invasion.

Your private journey begins at Pointe du Hoc.  Learn of the brave fight to take this cliff-top German defensive position which threatened both U.S. landing beaches.  Next you'll arrive at Omaha Beach, the best defended of the beaches and site of the landings' highest casualties.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

You'll move on for photo stops at Longues-sur-Mer, its big guns demonstrating the fire power the allies faced during the landing operations, and Arromanches where you'll see remnants of one of the two "Mulberry Harbors" constructed by the allies to land men, arms and supplies in the days following the invasion.

Next, are visits to Juno Beach where the Canadian forces came ashore and Sword Beach a British objective and the easternmost flank of the invasion front.

The last stop on your exploration is Pegasus Bridge: one of two strategic bridges taken in the first hours of the D-Day invasion with the aim of limiting the German counter attack.

Return to port.
