Best of Porto-Shore Excursion

OVERVIEW

Lovely Porto rises along steep hills situated on the banks of the Douro River: a jumble of red tile roofs & colorful facades tumbling to the riverfront.

It’s from this city, already an important commercial center, that the kingdom of Portugal took its name when founded in the 12th century. Porto is most famous for its unique fortified wines and characteristic historic center: a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Your English-speaking driver, at disposal for the excursion’s duration, greets you at the port’s arrivals terminal. Your comfortable and private air-conditioned vehicle allows quick, easy access to Porto’s “must see” sites.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Porto, with its 2000 year history, is Portugal’s second largest city. Its well preserved historic center exudes an Old World atmosphere, its monuments reflecting the city’s long, continuous growth and important relationship with the sea: source of its commercial prosperity and cultural character.

Ribeira, Porto’s riverside quarter, is the city’s most colorful district. Along its lively quayside, you can still see the distinctive Rabelo boats, an important element of the city’s and of Port wine’s history.

You’ll also visit the São Bento train station, noted for its characteristic Azulejo ceramic tiles that depict Portugal’s history as well as the Sè do Porto (cathedral), one of the city’s most important monuments in a mixture of architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque.
