The Hill Towns of Cortona & Assisi

OVERVIEW

Come to know two typical hill towns in different regions of Italy: neighbors Tuscany and Umbria. Cortona lies in central Tuscany, near the region’s eastern border with Umbria. Assisi is situated in central Umbria, the region known as Italy’s “green heart” for its verdant hills and valleys.

This driving tour takes you on a journey of discovery of these two towns and regions in a private vehicle with the personal services of an English-speaking driver at your disposal for the tour’s duration. Your vehicle allows you access to the most important sites in each of these lovely medieval hill towns.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Cortona seems to spill down its hillside. One of Tuscany’s oldest hill towns, its ancient origins pre-date even Rome and it was one of the Etruscan Confederation’s 12 main towns. The Etruscan and Roman walls still encircle this medieval town and walking along them affords breathtaking views of the expansive landscape spread before you. There’s much to discover in this charming town.

Assisi in Umbria is seated majestically high on the slopes of Mt. Subasio. Most famous for its association with St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Order, Assisi also boasts a long history, eventually becoming an important municipium under the Roman Republic. Evidence of its Roman past can still be found along with many other unmissable treasures.
