At one time, the entire Iberian Peninsula was held by the Moors: a nomadic Muslim population from North Africa. Over the course of 700 years, the Catholic rulers of Spain’s various kingdoms fought to re-take Spain from Moorish dominance.
In 1492 Granada, the last of the Muslim strongholds, surrendered ending Moorish rule and by 1516, Spain was a united kingdom under Habsburg rule. In 1561 King Filipe II moved the capital from Toledo to Madrid where it remains to this day.
