Montmartre Walking Tour

OVERVIEW

The District of Montmartre is set atop a hill and is Paris's highest point. Long associated with the art world, such famous artists as Degas and Matisse lived and worked here for a time. It is also home to the gleaming white Sacré-Coeur Basilica, one of the city's most visible landmarks.

Your private licensed local guide will take you on a walking tour of this fascinating area where you'll find other familiar landmarks such as the world-famous Moulin Rouge dance hall.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Montmartre ("mountain of the martyr") was named for the martyrdom of St. Denis who was beheaded on the hill in 250 A.S. The area remained a small village until it was incorporated into the city in 1860.

One of the unique sights of this area is the last remaining vineyard in Paris where they still produce a limited quantity of wine which is auctioned of for charity.

Montmartre is also famous for the many illustrious artists, like Renoir, van Gogh and Dufy, who lived and worked here. Your guide will show you where many of these artists stayed during their time here.

You'll also visit the unusual Neo-Romanesque Sacré-Coeur Basilica where you'll enjoy stunning views over the city and the district.
