Murano Glass Factory Tour

OVERVIEW

Venice has been famous for its glass for hundreds of years. The island of Murano, in the Venetian lagoon, became the center for Venice’s glass production in 1291 when the government ordered the foundries to move there as protection of the city against fire.

You’ll enjoy a short ride across the lagoon in a private water taxi to one of Murano’s glass factories for a demonstration of this fascinating art. Afterward, you’ll have time to visit the factory shop.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Venice’s glass artisans were highly skilled. Many of the processes in glassmaking, such as multicolored glass and crystalline glass, were developed or improved by Venetian glass masters. These craftsmen were so highly prized; they were forbidden to leave the Republic and given privileges not granted to other artisans.

You have the unique opportunity to see and learn about the glassmaking process. After a short trip aboard a private water taxi, you’ll arrive at one of Murano’s glass factories to be greeted by their English-speaking representative. You’ll have a brief explanation of the history and techniques of Venetian glassmaking, followed by a demonstration of glassblowing by a master.
After the demonstration, you’ll have time in the factory’s shop before we return you to Venice.
