DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Lisbon is one of the world’s oldest cities; having possibly been founded as a trading port by the Phoenicians. Roman presence dates from 205 BCE. After Rome’s fall, the city knew various masters before falling under Moorish control for more than 400 years. Lisbon was re-conquered by Portugal’s first king in 1147.

During the Age of Discoveries, Lisbon’s port was the main departure point for explorers in search of lands and riches to claim in Portugal’s name, making Portugal a rich and powerful maritime empire.
