The lovely medieval city of Coimbra is situated beside the Mondego River with its university proudly occupying the highest point in the city. The university, founded in 1290, is the city’s soul.This historic city also held the role of Portugal’s capital for more than 100 years before being moved to Lisbon in 1260 and six medieval kings were born here.

Vestiges of its time under Moorish dominance remain. In fact, Coimbra served as the base for the “Reconquista” of Portugal’s lands from the Muslim conquerors.
