Syracuse and Noto Discovery-Shore Excursion

OVERVIEW

Your destination today is the beautiful town of Syracuse in the southern part of the Island.

The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatre, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes.

You will visit the archaeological area of Neapolis with its Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and Latomia del Paradiso (with its Dionysius Hear) and the "Ara of Hyeron".

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Not to miss the Ortigia Island, the heart of the city with its the ancient narrow streets, which still keep the Medieval influence, before arriving at the Duomo square, one of the city highlights. You will visit the Cathedral, built above a Greek Temple, which holds more than 2.500 years of history.

In th afternoon you will enjoy a lovely stroll through the streets of Noto, a lovely town located southwest of the city of Syracuse and today representing the best example of the Baroque style architecture in Sicily.

Old Noto was totally destroyed in the very violent earthquake which struck Eastern Sicily in 1693. The present site of Noto was rebuilt from scratch: the old has mixed with the new, and a view from the top of a building on the hill will show the older buildings mixed with new and rebuilt architecture.

Return to the port.
