Barcelona remained enclosed by its medieval city walls well into the mid 1800’s despite its rapid growth during the industrial revolution. Finally, in 1859, it underwent its first major expansion and the Eixample district was created.

The area on the hill of Montjuic, with stunning views over the city to the sea, saw significant development for the International Exhibition of 1929 then again when Barcelona hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics. Many of the structures and monuments created for these events populate this area in addition to lovely parks, museums and a castle.
