OVERVIEW

Visit Portugal’s largest and most important pilgrimage destination: Fatima. Here, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children six times in May to October 1917; culminating with the “Miracle of the Sun” on 13th October witnessed by 70,000 people. The sun was said to have “danced” in the sky. Mary promised the miracle to the children as proof of her visits.

Your English-speaking driver meets you at the Port of Lisbon arrivals terminal. You’ll travel comfortably in a private, air-conditioned vehicle to Fatima, arriving directly to the Sanctuary complex to explore this place of mystery and miracles.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Fatima is a beautiful place of space and light with a profound religious aura: a place of curiosity to tourists and deep religious significance for the faithful.

The cornerstone for the church marking the site of the miracle was laid October 13, 1928. Completed in 1953, it was consecrated then conferred status of Basilica by Pope Pius XII. Development of the shrine continued.
Today, the square before the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary is larger St. Peter’s Square in Rome, hosting more than 100,000 pilgrims annually on the feast days. Among other monuments at the site are: the lower Basilica and the Chapel of the Apparitions, a statue of Our Lady before it.
