Fortified City of Óbidos-Shore Excursion
OVERVIEW
The fortified medieval village of Óbidos is a landscape out of time. Within the embrace of the encircling Moorish walls lies the entrancing ancient historic center: a collage of warm red and white for its whitewashed, terracotta-roofed houses that wind along medieval cobbled streets. Its hilltop perch affords breathtaking views over vineyards, windmills, cherry groves, villages and farms dotting the surrounding plain.
Considered one of Portugal’s most beautiful towns, Óbidos was designated a National Monument in 1951.
Your English-speaking driver meets you at the Port of Lisbon arrivals terminal. You’ll travel comfortably in a private, air-conditioned vehicle to this enchanted destination.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Óbidos has roots pre-dating Roman presence. The castle, begun in the 8th century during Moorish occupation, has an important history: being one of the first strongholds taken during the Reconquista and as a rallying symbol of freedom from French domination for the first victory over Napoleon’s army in the Peninsular Campaign.
In 1281, Óbidos was gifted by Portugal’s King to his Queen upon marriage; a tradition followed for 600 years. Much loved by the Portuguese Queens, the village was well cared for and improved over the centuries.
Pass an enjoyable visit strolling the narrow streets, glimpsing facades bedecked with colorful flowers in spring and summer. Browse artisan shops or sample the local sour cherry liquore: Ginja de Óbidos on your unforgettable excursion.
