DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Laid out upon a field of green as jewels on a velvet cushion, Pisa’s Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) is the setting for some of the world’s most famous monuments; the most recognizable of which is the Leaning Tower.
These monuments were situated outside the city’s protective walls to show everyone that the Republic of Pisa was so powerful it needn’t fear foreign attack.
The grouping is built in the unique Pisan Romanesque style, incorporating elements from the Eastern Mediterranean cultures with which Pisa traded or had conquered. The beautiful mosaic in the apse shows the Eastern Mediterranean influence. Further elements are the columns inside the church and the bronze griffin adorning the exterior, captured from Islamic lands.
